Tessa May Roberts, Licensed Pediatric Physical Therapist
About me

A licensed PT who knows kids.

I'm a licensed physical therapist with experience treating children across a wide range of settings, including hospital-based outpatient care, inpatient rehabilitation, early intervention, schools, and home-based therapy.

My goal is to make therapy both effective and accessible, empowering each child to reach their fullest potential in a comfortable, familiar environment. I develop personalized treatment plans, and use play-based, evidence-informed techniques to make therapy fun and meaningful.

Outside of work, I love running, going to concerts, playing volleyball and basketball, traveling, and trying new restaurants.

FAQ

Common questions

What ages do you work with? +

I work with children of all ages, from infants and toddlers through school-age children and teens. Each treatment plan is built around the child's specific developmental stage and goals.

Where do sessions take place? +

Sessions take place in your home or your child's daycare, wherever your child feels most comfortable. This natural setting lets us work on real-life skills in real-life environments.

What should I expect at the first visit? +

The first visit is a comprehensive evaluation. We'll discuss your concerns, your child's history, and goals for therapy. I'll observe your child's movement and provide an initial assessment, then we'll build a treatment plan together.

Do I need a referral from my pediatrician? +

Both Virginia and Washington, DC allow direct access to physical therapy without a referral, so you can book an evaluation directly. If we begin ongoing treatment after the initial evaluation, I will ask that you obtain a referral from your pediatrician at that point. This keeps your pediatrician informed and involved in your child's care, and it's also typically required if you plan to seek insurance reimbursement using a superbill. I'm happy to help you understand what may be needed for your specific situation.

How long are sessions and how often? +

Initial evaluations are typically 60 to 90 minutes. Follow-up treatment sessions are 60 minutes. The frequency depends on your child's needs, and most children benefit from weekly or biweekly visits.

Do you accept insurance? +

May Flowers is a private, out-of-network pediatric PT practice and does not bill insurance directly. This keeps care personalized, flexible, and free of insurance restrictions on session length and frequency. After each visit, you'll receive a detailed superbill you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement, and many PPO plans cover a portion of out-of-network pediatric PT. Before your first visit, I recommend calling your insurance and asking: "What are my out-of-network outpatient pediatric physical therapy benefits?" Knowing your deductible and reimbursement rate upfront helps you plan with confidence.

How do I know if my child needs PT? +

If you've noticed motor delays, asymmetry, walking concerns, frequent falls, or your pediatrician has mentioned it, an evaluation is a great first step. There's no harm in checking in early, and many concerns respond very well to early intervention.
